Openhand Labs shipped ten thousand curiosity kits to under-resourced schools
Openhand Labs started as three volunteers assembling circuit kits in a garage. Their model was deliberately unglamorous: cheap, reusable parts, paired with a one-page guide, sent to schools that requested them directly rather than through a bidding process.
Over four years the organisation has shipped kits to schools in six countries, tracking not just delivery but whether kits were still in use a year later — a metric most programs ignore.
Their retention data, unusually transparent for the sector, showed 78% of kits still active after twelve months, prompting two larger foundations to adopt their kit design.
