A branch library's tinker table became the busiest corner in the building
A single folding table with a box of donated parts — old radios, broken toys, a bag of screwdrivers — was meant to be a two-week trial in the children's section. Eighteen months later it's a permanent fixture with a waiting list for Saturday slots.
Librarian Fiona Doyle says the table's only rule is that everything must be taken apart before it's thrown away. Volunteers now run informal repair clinics on weekends, and the library has started a small lending catalogue of tools.
A second branch across the city has opened its own table, seeded with parts donated by the original.
